Bouldering
| Bouldering: what is it?
| Bouldering is a style of rock climbing. Bouldering is done without ropes and harnesses, on low level boulders or climbing walls with crash mats for protection. It can be practiced on large boulders outdoors or artificial man-made boulders such as indoor climbing walls.
| | | Is it for me? Anyone can try bouldering – it is easily accessable for all ages and abilities. Very little equipment is required to get started: just rock shoes and chalk. If you are bouldering at DCC with an experienced climber there is no need for an induction. However, if you have never bouldered before and wish to try it you can book an induction to get started. After the induction you can come down anytime and use the centre for a training session in a similar way that gyms are used.
Bouldering at Durham Climbing Centre - Boulderers may climb up, across or diagonally on the climbing walls. Climbs are marked out in different colours on the climbing walls with each climb called a ‘problem’. Problems are graded according to difficulty and are coloured to indicate easy, medium or difficult problems. Problem solving is involved when completing climbs and deciding where to move next. Strength and endurance training is promoted through short sequences of moves making up a problem.
Circuits - For a full workout, the boulderer can complete circuits. Working your way around a circuit can be really fun and give a full body work out. A circuit is a collection of problems of the same colour and /or similar difficulty. How can I get started? Phone the centre to book an induction with all equipment included or if you are experienced or climbing with someoone who is experienced just come along and have a go. Shoes and chalk can be bought or hired at the centre! |
